Logic State
Structural testing of complex integrated circuits relies on the ability to sample signal values at the device pins without using physical probes. A boundary cell capture occurs when the shift register latch stores the logic level of a connected net during a specific clock edge. This mechanism provides visibility into the electrical state of buried traces between surface-mounted components.
Register Function
Every input and output pin on a JTAG compliant device links to a dedicated storage element. During a boundary cell capture, the hardware snapshots the incoming or outgoing digital data for later retrieval through the serial test access port. The action occurs independently of the internal core logic of the component.
Data Extraction
Boundary scan software coordinates the timing of these snapshots across the entire printed circuit board. Success relies on the boundary cell capture occurring while signals are stable and valid according to the device timing specifications. The test controller manages the transition through the test access port state machine to synchronize the data storage.
Once the logic levels are held in the scan chain, the system shifts the bits out to compare them against the expected netlist values. Faults like open solder joints or bridges between pins reveal themselves when the captured bits differ from the known test vector.
