Heat Adjustment
Process optimization involves the precise adjustment of temperature setpoints and blower speeds across the individual heating stages of a reflow machine. Convection oven zone tuning ensures that the heat transfer rate matches the thermal requirements of the specific circuit board assembly being processed. This calibration creates a controlled environment where the assembly moves from preheat and liquidus phases.
Airflow Calibration
Operators modify the fan frequency and heater power in each vertical or horizontal section to achieve a target profile. Effective convection oven zone tuning balances the heat delivery to massive components with the need to avoid overheating sensitive parts. By adjusting the airflow, the system compensates for shadow effects where taller components block the heat from reaching smaller neighbors.
This step is repeated whenever the board density or copper weight changes substantially between production runs.
Profile Validation
Profiling tools equipped with thermocouples verify the success of the adjustment by recording the actual temperature experienced by the board at multiple points. If the measured delta T exceeds the allowable limit, the convection oven zone tuning must be revised to increase or decrease energy in specific zones. The process ends once the recorded curve fits within the solder paste manufacturer’s specifications.
