Chemical Processing
Controlled chemical removal of resin smear and laminate material from the internal copper foils of a drilled multilayer printed circuit board ensures strong subsequent electrical connections. This wet chemical or plasma procedure, known as desmear etch back, cleans the hole wall and exposes a small portion of the internal copper layers. By creating a three-point connection, the process enhances the mechanical and electrical reliability of the plated-through hole.
Interconnection Quality
Complete removal of epoxy resin debris prevents the formation of insulated barriers between the copper foil and the electroplated copper barrel. When desmear etch back is performed correctly, it allows the electroplated copper to wrap around the exposed inner foil, which distributes the mechanical stress during soldering. Inadequate treatment leads to inner layer separation under thermal strain, resulting in intermittent or open circuits.
Bath Chemistry
Maintaining precise concentration levels of potassium permanganate or sodium permanganate is necessary to avoid over-etching the resin and glass fiber layers. If the chemical treatment is too aggressive, desmear etch back can create deep cavities that are difficult to plate evenly during the subsequent metallization step. Regular chemical analysis and monitoring of the etch rate must be conducted to keep the process within the specified limits.
Furthermore, the process parameters must be adjusted for different laminate materials, as high-reliability resin systems resist chemical attacks more effectively than standard substrates.
