Mechanical Configuration
Overhead beam systems utilizing two independent arms allow for simultaneous movement across the board surface. A dual-gantry pick and place machine splits the mounting task between these two structures, each carrying its own set of placement heads. These beams travel on parallel tracks or shared rails, moving along the Y-axis while the heads move along the X-axis.
Coordination software prevents collisions between the gantries while they service different board regions or different boards in a multi-lane system.
Operational Logic
Shared work zones require complex path planning to ensure the gantries do not obstruct each other during the pickup cycle. One gantry might pick components from the rear feeders while the other places parts on the front half of the assembly.
Throughput Boundary
Speed gains over single-beam systems are realized by overlapping the pick-up and placement cycles. While the first head is scanning fiducials or placing, the second head is already at the feeder bank collecting the next set of components. This configuration doubles the theoretical placement rate without requiring a larger machine footprint.
It reaches its limit when the complexity of the board layout creates a bottleneck for one of the heads, forcing the other into a wait state.
