Alignment Feature
Copper patterns etched into the corners of a panel provide reference points for layer-to-layer positioning during the lamination process. A dynamic registration target allows the imaging system to calculate material stretch or shrinkage across the substrate surface. This feature ensures that drilled holes strike the center of internal pads despite the dimensional instability of thin laminates.
Processing Adjustment
Real-time adjustments occur when the exposure unit scans the panel and compares the actual location of the dynamic registration target against the master coordinate file. If the system detects a linear shift, it scales the artwork in the X or Y axis to compensate for the deviation. This capability is necessary for high-density interconnect designs where annular ring requirements leave little room for error.
Scaling factors are often applied differently to the machine direction and the cross direction of the glass weave.
Pattern Accuracy
Fabrication success relies on the clear visibility of these marks after multiple chemical treatments and heat cycles. Erosion of the dynamic registration target during the inner layer etch process can lead to false readings or failure of the optical alignment system. Reliable targets maintain sharp edges so the software can pinpoint the centroid with sub-micron precision.
