Compliance Framework
Electromagnetic compatibility standards establish test requirements for electronic equipment subjected to electrostatic discharge. The standard en 61000-4-2 defines the laboratory testing procedures and severity levels for both contact and air discharge methods. It specifies the wave shape of the discharge current, the calibration requirements of the test generator, and the environmental conditions required for verification.
This methodology ensures that testing laboratories generate consistent, reproducible electrical stresses across different testing sites.
Test Execution
Equipment under test is subjected to discharges applied to points that are accessible to operators during normal usage. The test pulse simulated by en 61000-4-2 features a rapid rise time of less than one nanosecond, mimicking the fast transfer of charge from a human body. Evaluators apply multiple positive and negative pulses to confirm the resilience of the circuit.
The performance of the equipment is then categorized by whether it continues to function, suffers temporary degradation, or experiences permanent damage, allowing manufacturers to determine if the design meets international acceptance criteria.
Design Protection
Printed circuit board designers place transient voltage suppression diodes close to external connectors to shunt high-voltage pulses to ground. This placement protects sensitive semiconductors from the spikes governed by en 61000-4-2 during operation. Proper ground planes prevent current from reaching inner signal layers.
