Processing System
An electronic manufacturing process populates printed circuit boards with surface mount components at high throughput rates. Modern high speed SMT assembly relies on synchronized pick-and-place machines and high-speed printers to place thousands of components per hour. Any delay in the stencil printing step halts the entire line, which means the solder paste must perform flawlessly under rapid squeegee cycles.
Component placement must occur with extreme precision even at these elevated speeds. Squeegees move at velocities exceeding one hundred and fifty millimeters per second, which places intense shear pressure on the solder paste. Fast cycle times demand that boards move through the printer in a matter of seconds.
Solder Requirement
Rheological properties of the paste determine the success of high-frequency squeegee strokes. Solder pastes used in high speed SMT assembly must thin rapidly and recover their structure almost immediately to prevent slump. If the paste remains too fluid after printing, the deposits will smear during the rapid board movements.
Fast-moving placement nozzles require a stable deposit that can absorb the impact of the component.
Quality Control
Automated inspection systems monitor every board at critical stages to prevent defect propagation. High-speed 3D paste inspection checks the volume of every deposit before the board enters the placement machine. Issues with paste transfer are corrected by adjusting print parameters or cleaning the stencil.
Reliable inspection ensures high yields without slowing down the line.
