Process Standard
Acceptance criteria for high-reliability Class 3 printed boards mandate controlled removal of dielectric material from hole sidewalls to expose inner layer copper lands. In multi-layer circuit board fabrication, internal pad etchback uses aggressive chemical solutions to clear resin smear and recess glass-epoxy dielectric away from drilled hole walls. Permanganate or plasma desmear processes remove organic drill debris before chemical etchback solutions selectively dissolve substrate resin and glass fibers.
Process controls target an etchback depth between two and thirteen micrometers, exposing three sides of inner layer copper surfaces to subsequent plating. Creating a three-point electrical contact between internal copper pads and the electrodeposited hole barrel strengthens thermal fatigue resistance.
Chemical Mechanism
Concentrated sulphuric acid or gas plasma mixtures attack organic dielectric resin matrix structures surrounding copper foils. Etchant bath temperature and immersion dwell time govern dielectric removal rates along the drilled barrel surface. Excessively deep etching produces sharp negative land overhangs that trap air bubbles or plating fluid during electroless copper deposition.
Glass etch solutions containing ammonium bifluoride remove exposed glass fiber tips, maintaining smooth hole wall contours.
Interconnect Reliability
Failure to clear resin smear from internal copper pads prevents metallic bonding between inner layers and electrodeposited barrel copper. Micro-section inspection under high magnification verifies positive etchback profiles without evidence of foil lifting or inner layer resin recession. Wicking defects occur when aggressive chemical etchants travel along glass filaments, creating pathways for copper plating solutions to penetrate raw laminates.
Solder float testing at elevated temperatures exposes latent interconnect separation in poorly processed multi-layer panels. Acceptance standards forbid negative etchback where resin protrudes past inner copper foil edges on Class 3 hardware.
