Thermal Estimation
Procedure used to determine the highest temperature of the internal active part of a semiconductor device during regular electrical operation. Accurate junction temperature calculation involves summing the ambient temperature and the product of the power dissipation and the thermal resistance of the device package. This specific figure is the most important factor in determining the overall life expectancy of the silicon chip inside.
Internal Load
When the calculated heat exceeds the safe operating area, the chemical bonds inside the device degrade at an exponentially faster rate. Specialists check junction temperature calculation against the data sheet limit of typical parts, which is often set at one hundred and twenty five or one hundred and fifty degrees Celsius. Cooling solutions such as heat sinks or fans are adjusted based on these findings to keep heat away from critical gates.
A difference of only five degrees can double or halve the operational life of the device.
Calculation Basis
Reliable estimation requires knowledge of the thermal path from the silicon surface through the copper lead frame to the printed circuit board. If these assumptions are wrong, the real temperature might far exceed the safety margin. Regular audits ensure the thermal values used match the actual assembled conditions on the factory floor.
