Ceramic Integrity
Component failure modes in surface mount capacitors involve the formation of structural fissures in the brittle dielectric material. A common cause of mlcc ceramic cracking is the mechanical strain applied to the board during panel singulation or connector insertion. These cracks are often invisible to the naked eye but lead to electrical leakage or catastrophic short circuits over time.
Flexural Loading
When a circuit board bends, the solder joints transfer the stress to the ceramic body of the capacitor. If the stress exceeds the tensile strength of the material, mlcc ceramic cracking occurs near the termination ends. This problem is most common in larger package sizes such as 1206 or 1210 because they are less able to absorb the strain than smaller parts.
Damage Detection
Inspection of the capacitors after assembly often requires high-magnification cameras or acoustic microscopy to find internal damage. Since mlcc ceramic cracking might not cause an immediate failure, electrical testing alone is sometimes not enough to catch every defect. Manufacturers prevent this issue by using soft-termination capacitors or by placing the parts parallel to the direction of the expected board flexure.
Establishing strict handling rules and using automated support during board cutting also helps to maintain the integrity of the ceramic layers.
