Mechanical Boundary
Physical transition zone between the thin conductive layer deposited onto a non conductive substrate and the subsequent bulk electroplating. The seed layer interface forms the foundation for all electrical connections on a circuit board fabricated using semi additive or fully additive processes. It is typically composed of a thin film of sputtered copper or chemically deposited electroless copper.
The quality of this junction determines the adhesion strength of the entire circuit trace.
Delamination Risk
Contamination or oxidation at the seed layer interface weakens the bond between the two copper layers. If the electroless copper is not properly cleaned or activated before the electrolytic plating step, an epitaxial mismatch or a layer of impurities can form. This creates a plane of weakness that may separate during the thermal stress of reflow or during mechanical bending of a flexible board.
Such a failure appears as a clean separation of the trace from the underlying seed layer. Rigorous control of the micro etch and rinse steps is required to ensure a clean metallic bond across the whole surface.
Quality Inspection
Peel testing provides a quantitative assessment of the bond strength. Measurement of the force required to pull a trace away from the substrate provides a direct evaluation of the interface integrity.
