Dimensional Validation
Optical metrology systems project geometric patterns onto a three-dimensional object to map its physical features. Structured light triangulation recovers surface topography by measuring the deformation of a fringe pattern as it interacts with the target volume. Cameras capture the displaced lines from multiple angles to calculate depth coordinates based on the known geometry of the projector and sensor array.
This method provides non-contact surface inspection for complex assemblies where tactile probes cause damage to delicate components or sensitive coatings.
Calibration Requirements
Mathematical models link pixel coordinates in the sensor to spatial positions in the measurement volume. Periodic calibration routines determine the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the system components to maintain volumetric accuracy. Variations in ambient temperature or mechanical vibrations alter the projector focal length or the sensor alignment, necessitating frequent re-verification of the baseline.
Software algorithms compensate for optical distortion by applying correction coefficients derived from a reference artifact of known dimensions. Precise alignment of the optical axis against the movement stage prevents geometric bias in the point cloud data.
Assembly Application
Solder paste volume inspection systems use this measurement principle to evaluate the height and spread of deposits across high density printed circuit boards. Automated optical inspection stations compare captured topographies against design files to verify that component placement meets alignment tolerances. Variations in surface reflectivity on metallic pads create noise during the image capture phase, requiring filters that suppress specular reflections.
High speed processing units execute fast Fourier transforms on the captured fringe patterns to extract height maps within the cycle time of standard surface mount production lines. The integration of high resolution projection systems into the production flow increases the detection rate of bridge defects and insufficient solder joints on fine pitch packages.
