Feeder Waste
The loss of electronic parts at the beginning of a component tape reel when threading it into an SMT feeder is a standard process loss. Minimizing tape leader attrition is necessary to prevent high-value components from being discarded before the automated assembly machine can begin placing them. This waste occurs because the protective cover tape must be peeled back to secure it to the feeder tape reel take-up mechanism.
Loader Mechanism
Different feeder models require varying lengths of exposed carrier tape to load correctly into the machine feed path. Inexpensive parts on long tape reels are packaged with long, empty plastic leader tapes to avoid part waste during setup. However, shorter cut tapes or custom parts often lack this empty leader, meaning the first few active components are lost when the tape is threaded.
SMT operators must manually handle these short reels or splice on leader extensions to avoid wasting high-cost silicon.
Mitigation Strategy
Splicing tools and adhesive tape leaders allow operators to connect a new reel to the end of a running tape. This continuous feed reduces tape leader waste and avoids machine downtime for re-threading. By extending tape reels, manufacturers protect their margins on high-mix, low-volume production runs.
