Temperature Tracking
Plotting the temperature versus time for an assembly as it travels through a reflow oven is necessary to ensure all joints receive the correct amount of heat. A thermal mass profile records the temperature variations across different areas of the board, showing how lighter components heat up faster than heavier ones. This mapping helps engineers adjust the oven zone temperatures so that all solder joints reach reflow temperature simultaneously.
The profile is generated using a data logger attached to thermocouples positioned at various points on the test board. It provides a visual representation of the thermal energy distribution across the entire board surface.
Assembly Loading
Varying component sizes and board thicknesses on a single assembly create unequal heat absorption rates during the reflow process. A heavy connector acts as a heat sink, requiring more energy to reach soldering temperature than a small chip resistor. Recording this heat absorption profile helps prevent cold solder joints on larger components while avoiding overheating of sensitive, low-mass devices.
Balancing this temperature spread is a primary challenge in high-density board assemblies.
Process Optimization
Configuring oven conveyor speed and zone temperature setpoints is the direct outcome of analyzing this measurement data. The goal is to keep the delta temperature across the board as narrow as possible during the liquidus phase. Profiling runs are conducted during the initial production setup and whenever board designs or component layouts undergo changes.
