Assembly Tooling
Custom carriers designed to hold a printed circuit board and protect specific areas while it passes through a molten solder wave. Use of wave soldering fixtures allows for the processing of double-sided boards by shielding surface mount components on the bottom side. These frames also prevent thin boards from sagging under the weight of heavy components at high temperatures.
Process Protection
Machined pockets in the carrier isolate the areas that should not receive solder from the liquid metal. These wave soldering fixtures are typically made from composite materials or titanium to resist the heat and flux chemicals. Clamping mechanisms hold the board firmly to maintain planarity and prevent the solder from leaking into the masked regions.
Holes in the fixture align with the through-hole pins to allow the solder to reach only the intended pads. This selective exposure is necessary for complex boards with high component density.
Production Efficiency
Tooling reduces the need for manual masking tape which saves time during the preparation phase. If wave soldering fixtures are not properly maintained, they can accumulate dross or warp, leading to poor solder quality. Accumulated flux residues prevent the board from seating correctly and lead to uneven solder contact.
