Layout Characteristic
Circuit board fabrication requires an assessment of the geometric center of all conductive areas on a specific layer. Calculating the copper density centroid helps engineers predict how a panel will bow or twist during the lamination process. A large offset between the geometric center of the board and the mass center of the copper leads to uneven mechanical tension.
Warpage Calculation
Imbalanced layers create internal stresses that pull the fiberglass substrate out of a flat plane. If the copper density centroid is located far from the center of the board, the thin laminate will likely curve toward the heavier copper concentration. Designers mitigate this by adding copper thieving or dummy pads to pull the balance back toward the middle.
Etching Balance
Chemical removal of copper occurs at different rates depending on the proximity of surrounding traces. Large open areas near a dense cluster of copper change the local fluid dynamics of the etchant. Maintaining a centered distribution ensures that the chemical spray hits the surface with uniform pressure and concentration across the entire panel.
If the density shifts too far, the resulting uneven surface causes defects during solder paste deposition and component placement. Manufacturers use automated software to identify these coordinates before releasing the design to the factory floor.
