Environmental Storage
Desiccated storage environments utilize low humidity control systems to maintain the integrity of moisture sensitive devices between assembly steps. Proper dry cabinet baking involves placing surface mount components in an atmosphere with relative humidity levels often held below five percent to halt the absorption of water vapor. This preventative measure protects plastic encapsulated microcircuits from internal damage during the high heat of reflow soldering.
Thermal Processing
De-moisturizing at low temperatures prevents the rapid expansion of trapped moisture that leads to delamination or the popcorning effect. While dry cabinet baking takes more time than high temperature oven cycles, it avoids the degradation of component solderability and prevents the growth of intermetallic layers on lead finishes. Operators track the total time parts spend in these units to ensure the floor life remains within the limits specified by the IPC J-STD-033 standard.
Atmospheric Recovery
Ultra-low humidity generators within the enclosure provide the rapid recovery times needed after the doors are opened for loading. Integrated sensors monitor the internal environment and trigger alarms if the moisture level rises above the programmed set point. Reliability depends on the physical seal of the gaskets and the efficiency of the desiccant regeneration process.
