Temporal Constraint
Cumulative duration of time that a moisture sensitive device remains safe for reflow soldering after its protective humidity packaging is opened. Managing a floor life budget involves strict record keeping to track the duration of exposure to ambient humidity on the production floor. Once the time expires, the component must undergo a specific baking cycle to remove absorbed moisture.
This calculation is essential for surface mount components with moisture sensitivity levels ranging from two to five.
Exposure Tracking
Inventory systems monitor each reel as it enters and leaves storage to prevent the accumulation of time outside of controlled environments. Whenever a device is returned to a moisture barrier bag with a fresh desiccant, its floor life budget stops decreasing until it is retrieved again. Accuracy in this tracking avoids micro-cracking or delamination during the reflow stage.
Records must indicate the current humidity of the assembly environment.
Process Integrity
Manufacturing environments typically maintain forty to sixty percent relative humidity to balance the needs of operators and static sensitive items. If the environment becomes more humid, the floor life budget is consumed at a faster rate according to standard look-up tables. Devices exceeding their time limit are marked as restricted.
Baking resets the internal counter.
