Lamination Schedule
Control of the pressure profile over the course of the multilayer board lamination cycle represents the primary means of ensuring consistent resin flow and curing. Here, hydraulic press timing determines the exact moment high pressure is applied to the stack. This pressure is applied when the prepreg resin is at its minimum viscosity to allow it to flow into the copper clearances.
Processing Window
Inconsistent timing results in either excessive resin squeeze-out or insufficient clearance filling. When pressure is applied too early in the cycle, the highly fluid resin is forced out of the stack, leaving the laminates resin-starved and thin. Conversely, applying pressure too late, after the resin has begun to crosslink, prevents proper flow, causing internal voids.
Advanced press systems use rheological curves to synchronize the force ramp with the temperature profile.
Operational Control
Programmable logical controllers automate this cycle to eliminate error and ensure repeatability between batches. Temperature sensors embedded within the press plates feed real-time data to the controller, which adjusts the ram pressure according to the prepregs cure characteristics. This precise control is critical for high-layer-count boards with varying copper density, where the processing window is very narrow.
Quality control laboratories review the logs of these press cycles to confirm compliance before releasing the panels for drilling.
