Glass Composition
Specialized glass fiber reinforcements provide lower signal loss than standard E-glass for high frequency substrate manufacturing. An l-glass laminate uses a modified chemical composition that reduces the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor of the glass yarns. This material is designed for high speed digital and radio frequency applications where signal attenuation must be kept to a minimum.
Signal Integrity
Electrical performance at frequencies above 10 GHz depends on the properties of the reinforcement fabric. Because an l-glass laminate has a lower loss tangent than traditional materials, it reduces the dielectric heating and signal decay in long transmission lines. The lower dielectric constant also allows for wider traces for a given impedance, which further reduces resistive losses.
Designers specify these laminates for servers, networking hardware, and telecommunications equipment that operate with very fast edge rates. This choice of material helps maintain the eye opening in digital signals by reducing both jitter and attenuation.
Fabrication Benefit
Processing these materials requires the same equipment as standard epoxy resins. An l-glass laminate is compatible with existing drilling and plating processes, allowing for a smooth transition from lower-performance substrates. While the raw material cost is higher than standard options, the improvement in signal quality can eliminate the need for expensive active components like redrivers.
Manufacturers verify the quality of the laminate through micro-sectioning and dielectric spectroscopy to ensure it meets the target specifications.
