Component Dispenser
An automated component supply system designed to hold and present matrix trays of integrated circuits to a pick-and-place machine ensures a steady stream of large or delicate devices during assembly. This module, designated as a matrix tray feeder, handles parts such as ball grid arrays or quad flat packages that cannot be supplied in tape-and-reel format. The device sits adjacent to the placement platform and presents the parts sequentially, allowing the machine to swap empty trays for full ones automatically.
Handling Mechanism
The elevator system within the unit raises and lowers multiple stacked trays to bring the active tray into the reach of the machine’s pickup head. Utilizing a matrix tray feeder prevents component damage during feed cycles by maintaining the parts in protective molded pockets until the pickup head retrieves them. The pick-and-place nozzle uses a mechanical or vacuum grip to extract the component directly from its pocket.
Space Consumption
This feeder occupies multiple standard tape slots on the machine feeder bank, representing a substantial trade-off in machine capacity. An assembly line requiring numerous tray-packaged devices might need a dedicated tray-sequencing tower to feed the line without frequent human intervention. This configuration increases setup times but is necessary for complex boards.
