Tooling Logic
Selection of vacuum tips for an automated assembly head depends on the geometry and weight of the components being placed. A nozzle allocation matrix maps each available spindle to a specific nozzle size and type to minimize the number of tool changes required during a cycle. It accounts for the physical diameter of the nozzle tip relative to the part body to ensure a secure vacuum seal without damaging adjacent components.
Planning this layout is a necessary step in the setup process for complex boards with a wide variety of package sizes.
Optimization Variable
Speed is maximized when the head can pick a full set of parts in a single pass without visiting the tool changer station. The nozzle allocation matrix balances the needs of small chip resistors against larger integrated circuits to keep the gantry moving.
Operational Constraint
Physical limits of the tool bank and the head geometry define the boundaries of the plan. If a specific nozzle allocation matrix requires more high-flow nozzles than the machine has in its inventory, the software must insert manual pauses or tool swaps. This can significantly increase the cycle time for a single board.
Careful analysis of the Bill of Materials is necessary to generate a plan that avoids these bottlenecks.
