Mechanical Metric
The measured tension required to separate the top protective film from the embossed carrier ribbon determines the ease of automated component removal. Maintaining the correct cover tape peel force prevents components from sticking to the film or escaping from the pockets. This mechanical property must lie within a tight window to support high-speed pick-and-place feeders.
Adhesion Testing
Standardized tests utilize a peel force tester to pull the film at a specified angle of one hundred and eighty degrees. The testing machine records the tension over a set distance to plot the maximum and minimum peel resistance. If the adhesion is too high, the feeder cannot remove the film, which causes automated assembly to halt.
Conversely, weak adhesion causes the cover tape to separate prematurely, spilling delicate surface mount components. Manufacturers execute these checks at regular intervals to maintain consistency across different supply batches.
Process Performance
Environmental factors such as ambient temperature and storage humidity affect the adhesive bonding strength over time. Continuous monitoring during assembly preparation prevents feeder failures caused by adhesive degradation. Heat-activated cover tapes require precise sealing temperatures during the packaging stage to establish a stable bond.
Controlling these parameter variations leads to higher yield rates in electronic assembly.
