Thermal Property
Material testing determines the number of seconds a B stage resin remains in a liquid state at a specific temperature before it hardens. Knowing the prepreg gelation time allows a board fabricator to set the press cycle parameters for multi layer lamination. This duration marks the window where the resin can flow into the gaps between copper traces and expel air.
Flow Control
Proper wetting of the internal layers depends on the resin staying fluid long enough to saturate the glass cloth and bond to the foil. If the prepreg gelation time is too short, the resin may cure before it fills all the voids, leading to internal delamination. Conversely, a period that is too long might cause excessive squeeze out, resulting in thin dielectric layers and impedance mismatches.
The lab measures this by placing a sample on a hot plate and stirring it until it strings or forms a solid mass.
Quality Assay
Incoming batches of material are checked against the manufacturer data sheet to ensure consistency. A shift in prepreg gelation time often indicates that the material was stored at the wrong temperature or has exceeded its shelf life. This metric acts as a primary gate for releasing material to the lamination room.
