Thermal Engineering
Thermal profiling of reflow ovens and wave soldering machines is a required step to ensure that electronic assemblies are processed within specified component and solder temperature limits. The profile setup costs represent the expenditures in time, labor, and scrap materials needed to establish these thermal configurations before starting a production run. These costs are higher for high density, complex boards that use high temperature alloys or contain a mix of very large and very small components.
Production managers calculate these setup expenses when scheduling production runs and estimating assembly batch costs.
Production Efficiency
Sacrificial test boards and thermal profiling systems must be prepared for each unique assembly layout. When profile setup costs are high, it is often because multiple profile iterations must be run using a fully populated sample board to ensure that all solder joints reach the required melting temperatures. Thermocouples must be glued to critical spots on the test board, which is then passed through the oven to collect temperature data.
This test board is typically destroyed or rendered unusable for customer shipments, adding to the total material cost of the setup process.
Run Optimization
Reflow simulation software can reduce these setup expenses by predicting the thermal response of the board in the oven. By analyzing the board dimensions, copper distribution, and component types, the software can generate a close starting profile. This reduces the number of test runs required to find the correct oven settings.
