Process Calibration
Instrumented test assemblies carrying temperature sensors serve as standard measuring tools during reflow furnace setup and routine validation. Deploying a profile vehicle through a continuous reflow oven captures real time thermal trajectories across representative printed circuit board features and component locations. The test assembly matches the physical dimensions, layer count, copper weight and component distribution of actual production boards to mirror genuine thermal absorption behavior.
Data gathered during test runs confirms that heating zones and conveyor speeds produce thermal curves within specified solder paste processing limits.
Thermocouple Attachment
Thermocouples attached to the profile vehicle must establish direct metal to metal contact with component leads, thermal pads and exposed laminate substrate areas. Technicians utilize high temperature solder alloys or conductive epoxy adhesives to secure sensor wires without insulating the measurement node. Wiring leads pass into a thermal barrier box that protects the data logging instrument from high furnace temperatures during the transit cycle.
Sensor placement focuses on extreme thermal conditions, monitoring the hottest low mass devices and the coolest high mass inductors simultaneously.
Data Analysis
Extracted thermal profiles reveal ramp rates, peak temperatures, soak durations and cooling slopes across all instrumented channels. Engineering teams compare gathered thermal data against paste vendor specifications to sign off reflow lines for production runs.
