Mechanical Rigidness
Auxiliary carrier frames hold printed circuit boards during the thermal excursion of a convection oven to counteract the influence of gravity on softened laminate. These reflow support pallets prevent the sagging of heavy or thin substrates that lose structural integrity once the solder paste enters a liquid state. The device mitigates warpage that otherwise causes misalignment between component pads and their respective solder joints.
Consistent board flatness across the entire surface area ensures uniform pressure during the cooling phase as the joints solidify.
Dimensional Accuracy
Thermal expansion coefficients mismatch between copper traces, glass epoxy resin and the carrier itself create internal stresses during the heating cycle. Engineers fabricate reflow support pallets from composites that resist deformation while maintaining high heat conductivity to allow proper solder joint maturation. Each unit features precise contact points positioned away from sensitive solder fillets to avoid physical disruption of the liquid metal.
Proper orientation inside the carrier prevents shadow effects where the mask blocks airflow or infrared radiation from reaching specific components. These fixtures demand periodic inspection because cumulative exposure to high temperatures causes the material to degrade or drift from the original tolerances.
Load Distribution
Support pins or edge clamps must accommodate the specific weight profile of a populated assembly to maintain consistent clearance from the conveyor chain. If the assembly carries high mass components on the underside, the frame configuration provides additional elevation to avoid contact with the heating elements. Failure to properly distribute the vertical load results in uneven cooling rates across the board surface which induces latent defects like cracked joints or micro-fractures in the base material.
Precision hardware remains a requirement for all double-sided board production where the risk of secondary reflow or component shifting reaches its maximum magnitude.
