Thermal Configuration
Convection oven controls dictate the specific heater values required to melt solder alloys and form reliable electrical connections. Configuring the reflow zone temperature setpoints requires balancing the thermal mass of the assembly against the maximum temperature limits of the components. These adjustments are made zone by zone to create the required temperature-over-time profile.
Liquidus Preservation
Oven heaters must provide enough heat to melt the solder alloy and hold it in a liquid state for a specified duration. The reflow zone temperature setpoints must be high enough to ensure the entire board exceeds the liquidus temperature of the alloy. However, if the setpoints are too high, delicate components may suffer damage from heat stress.
Operators use thermal profiling boards to ensure that the actual temperatures match the target numbers.
Profile Optimisation
Setting the temperatures for each oven zone requires adjusting both the conveyor speed and the heater output. When the reflow zone temperature setpoints are dialed in correctly, the board reaches the peak reflow temperature without spending too much time at high temperatures. This minimizes the growth of intermetallic compounds that can make solder joints brittle and prone to failure.
Fine-tuning these values is a continuous process that depends on the specific board density and the type of paste used. This process ensures high yield and reliable performance across different product batches.
