Pressure Equalization
Lamination presses use heavy steel plates to separate individual circuit board panels within a stack. To ensure that pressure is applied evenly across the varying topography of the boards, a separator plate cushion is placed between the steel and the product. These sacrificial materials are often made of specialized paper or silicone-coated fabrics.
They compress under load to compensate for minor irregularities in the press plates or the board stack.
Thermal Management
Heat must pass from the press platens through the stack to cure the resin in the boards. A separator plate cushion acts as a thermal buffer that slows the initial rise in temperature. This delay prevents the outer layers of the board from curing before the inner layers have reached the correct temperature.
By controlling the heat ramp, the cushion helps ensure a uniform chemical reaction throughout the entire stack. Consistent thickness and density of the cushion material are vital for repeatable results.
Surface Protection
Hard steel plates can damage the delicate copper foil if any debris is present. The separator plate cushion provides a soft interface that protects the surface of the circuit board from scratches and dents. Using fresh cushion material for each cycle maintains the quality of the finished laminate.
