Data Transmission
Signal modulation technique allows the transfer of four voltage levels instead of two to increase the bandwidth of a high speed digital link. Achieving signal integrity pam4 requires managing the increased sensitivity to noise that comes from reducing the voltage gap between states. Because the eye opening is much smaller than in traditional binary signaling, the design must minimize jitter and crosstalk.
This approach doubles the data rate without doubling the required frequency bandwidth of the channel.
Loss Management
Insertion loss becomes the dominant factor in system performance as data rates move toward 112 Gbps and beyond. Maintaining signal integrity pam4 involves using ultra-low loss laminates and smooth copper foils to preserve the signal amplitude. Reflection at the connectors or via transitions can easily close the narrow eyes of the four-level signal.
Engineers use advanced equalization and forward error correction to recover the data at the receiving end of the link.
Layout Precision
Placement of traces and vias requires extreme accuracy to prevent timing skew between differential pairs. If the physical path lengths are not perfectly matched, signal integrity pam4 degrades and the bit error rate climbs. Thorough simulation and testing with a vector network analyzer confirm that the physical board meets the design requirements.
