Path Characterization
Scattering parameters describe the forward transmission coefficient of a signal passing through a two port network from the input to the output. Measuring vector network analyzer s21 provides the magnitude and phase of the signal as it travels through a board trace or a connector. This value represents the insertion loss and gain of the circuit.
Engineers use this data to verify that the signal arrives at the receiver with sufficient amplitude.
Magnitude Response
Logarithmic plots show how much of the signal is lost at different frequencies. In the context of vector network analyzer s21, a value of zero decibels indicates perfect transmission without any loss. High speed traces often show a downward slope as frequency increases due to dielectric and skin effect losses.
These measurements are used to calibrate equalization circuits that compensate for the loss.
Phase Alignment
Measurement of the phase shift is critical for maintaining the timing of digital signals. The vector network analyzer s21 data allows designers to see the group delay and ensure that different signal paths are matched in length. If the phase response is non linear, it can cause signal distortion.
Calibration of the test equipment with a known standard is required to remove the effects of the cables and probes. This measurement is the primary way to validate the high frequency performance of a finished board.
