Image Computation
The total time required for a machine vision system to capture, process and analyze a high resolution image of a component or circuit board is a critical metric. This vision processing latency affects how quickly the pick and place system can confirm part alignment before placing it. Calculations cover edge detection, fiducial matching and offset calculation.
Throughput Penalty
Long processing times can slow down the entire SMT assembly line, forcing the robotic head to wait for calculations to finish. This delay reduces the effective components-per-hour rating of the machine, regardless of its mechanical speed. In high volume production, every millisecond of calculation time accumulates to reduce the daily output.
High speed lines cannot tolerate slow vision systems and require fast processing algorithms to maintain yield.
System Acceleration
Specialized hardware co-processors and optimized neural networks are used to reduce the calculation time to a few milliseconds. By executing the image analysis in parallel with the head’s physical travel, the machine can mask some of the delay. High speed cameras with on-board processing can also offload tasks from the main computer.
This approach allows the assembly system to operate at maximum mechanical velocity without risking component misalignment. Modern SMT equipment depends on this overlapping process to achieve high throughput.
