Surface Energetics
Surface energy evaluation measured against the contact geometry of a distilled liquid droplet quantifies surface cleanliness and wettability on circuit substrate materials. The water contact angle measures the mechanical tangent angle formed at the three-phase intersection where liquid, gas, and solid meet on a printed circuit board surface. Low angles indicate high surface energy and good wettability, whereas high angles reveal low surface energy or organic contamination.
In circuit fabrication, this physical metric evaluates plasma cleaning efficacy before wire bonding, conformal coating application, or direct metallization steps.
Process Verification
Plasma treatment and micro-etching processes increase surface energy by removing residual organic soils, mold release agents, and airborne hydrocarbons. Measuring water contact angle via optical goniometry provides quantitative feedback on surface activation levels before applying solder mask or laminating dry film photoresist. When plasma treatment breaks down organic contamination and adds polar functional groups, liquid drops spread flat across the surface, yielding droplet angles below twenty degrees.
Conversely, uncleaned or contaminated laminate surfaces cause water droplets to bead up into steep spherical profiles exceeding eighty degrees.
Contamination Thresholds
Quality control protocols establish maximum allowable contact angles for incoming raw boards and post-cleaning stages. Exceeding established angular limits triggers re-cleaning or plasma recalibration before proceeding to secondary assembly steps.
