Inspection Technique
Nondestructive evaluation is necessary to verify the internal feature positions of complex multilayer laminates. Through x-ray metrology alignment, fabricators can measure the exact positions of buried copper pads without destroying the panel. This optical alignment system provides the dimensional feedback needed to calibrate subsequent manufacturing stages.
Drill Registration
Precision drilling requires the drill bits to target the centers of internal capture pads that are invisible to the naked eye. In x-ray metrology alignment, the system measures the centers of copper fiducials on different layers to calculate the average offset. The drilling machine uses this coordinate offset data to adjust its path for each unique panel.
This dynamic compensation ensures that the drill penetrates the center of all internal pads, avoiding breakout defects.
Process Stabilization
Keeping high multi-layer yields requires continuous monitoring of laminate drift during the hot lamination cycle. By using x-ray metrology alignment on production lots, engineers can trace trends in resin flow and material shrinkage. This quantitative data allows them to adjust the artwork scaling factors on future runs to offset the calculated material movement.
Quality control teams use these measurement files to audit registration trends and flag mold wear before defects occur. This proactive tracking ensures that complex boards meet the strict tolerances of aerospace and medical electronics.
