Registration Evaluation
Sacrificial circuit board structures placed on the panel border measure the alignment accuracy between different conductive layers during multilayer lamination. These alignment coupons provide a measurable verification of inner-layer registration before the panel is routed into individual boards. The physical patterns on these structures undergo optical or x-ray inspection to ensure the copper pads align across all stacked laminates within specified tolerance boundaries.
Inspection Method
Mechanical drilling through the target centers of the copper circles reveals the degree of radial deviation under microscopic inspection. Fabricators use the alignment coupons to evaluate whether the press cycle has caused layer shifting or layer distortion beyond acceptable manufacturing limits. When a drill breaks out of the pad boundary on any internal layer, the panel is rejected to avoid intermittent electrical failures in the finished product.
This destructive analysis offers a direct physical confirmation of lamination accuracy, which prevents marginal boards with compromised via connections from passing into subsequent plating steps.
Process Variance
Fabricating high-density designs requires tight control over layer registration to prevent break-outs on via pads. Measuring the alignment coupons after the lamination press run provides a reliable way to verify the tooling and press parameters. By analyzing the systematic shift across several production runs, engineers can adjust the scaling factors used during the photo-plotting of work to compensate for material shrinkage.
