Containment Structure
Physical barriers prevent the migration of liquid resin or conductive adhesive into keep-out zones during the encapsulation of sensitive electronic components. These boundary dams provide the structural frame required to maintain specific height profiles for dam and fill operations. Failure to maintain the integrity of these barriers results in the contamination of neighboring surface mount pads.
Flow Management
Placement of a high viscosity bead around the perimeter of an integrated circuit allows a lower viscosity material to be dispensed as an underfill or glob top. Efficient use of boundary dams ensures that the protective material stays within the intended area and does not interfere with mechanical housing or optical paths. The height and width of the bead determine the final volume capacity for the filling stage.
By controlling the dispensing speed and pressure, the operator achieves a consistent bead that resists the lateral pressure of the subsequent fill. This controlled process prevents the encapsulation material from reaching solder joints that must remain clean for secondary assembly steps.
Inspection Criterion
Quality assurance teams verify the presence and continuity of the barrier using high resolution camera systems before the curing stage begins. A breach in the perimeter usually leads to the rejection of the assembly. Acceptable parts show a continuous path without slump or voids.
