Interface Instrument
Precision instruments designed for wafer or circuit board testing at gigahertz frequencies facilitate the transmission of high speed signals with minimal distortion. Using a grounded shield flanking the signal conductor, coplanar microwave probes maintain a constant impedance path into the device under test. These tools operate where traditional spring pins fail due to parasitic inductance.
Waveguide Structure
Signal integrity depends on the physical geometry of the probe tips and the contact pads. The transition from a coaxial cable to the flat surface of the PCB occurs within the body of coplanar microwave probes. Every physical dimension is machined to tight tolerances to prevent signal reflection.
Misalignment of only a few microns degrades the accuracy of the measurement.
Calibration Procedure
Measurement accuracy requires a formal correction process to remove the electrical effects of the test apparatus. Standard calibration substrates provide known impedances that allow the system to null out the influence of coplanar microwave probes. This step ensures that the resulting data describes only the circuit under investigation.
Verification of the probe condition happens before each production run to maintain consistency. Technicians use short, open, load and through standards to establish a reference plane at the probe tips.
