Verification Master
Production testers use a known-good assembly to verify that the measurement results of the equipment are accurate and repeatable. A golden board is a circuit board that has been exhaustively tested and confirmed to meet every design specification without any defects. This unit acts as the physical standard against which all other boards in a production run are compared during the calibration of automated test equipment.
It governs the validation of the test process and stops being used when the project design changes or the board degrades.
Calibration Usage
Technicians run this master unit through the test fixtures at the start of every shift to ensure the sensors and pins are functioning correctly. If the golden board fails a test that it previously passed, the issue is likely with the test equipment rather than the product. This immediate feedback allows the team to identify worn pogo pins or loose cables before they cause false failures on the production line.
The board is also used to train automated optical inspection systems by providing a perfect image of component alignment and solder fillet shapes. By establishing a baseline of perfection, the factory can maintain a high level of consistency across thousands of units. This practice reduces the risk of drifting measurements leading to an accidental defect escape.
Storage Requirement
Protecting the integrity of the reference unit is necessary for long-term accuracy. A golden board must be stored in an anti-static container and kept in a controlled environment to prevent oxidation of the pads or mechanical damage. This preservation ensures the board remains a reliable standard for the life of the product.
