Measurement Margin
Safety offsets applied to technical specifications ensure that uncertainty in measurement does not lead to the acceptance of failing units. Establishing guard banding limits creates a sub-window within the official tolerance range to provide high confidence in the output data. This buffer accounts for the drift inherent in any precision testing equipment.
Operational Buffer
Thresholds are narrowed by moving the upper and lower limits closer to the nominal value. When guard banding limits are strictly enforced, units that are very close to the legal boundary are rejected to prevent the possibility that a slight error in the gauge would have missed a failure. This strategy increases the false failure rate but significantly reduces the number of defective units sent to customers.
The calculation for these margins involves taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the manufacturing variance and the measurement uncertainty. Test engineers modify these gaps based on the sensitivity of the product application. For medical or aerospace products, the boundaries are significantly tighter than for standard consumer electronics.
Risk Profile
Smaller bands increase productivity at the factory gate but expose the project to higher field failure rates. Selecting the width is a direct decision involving the tolerance for rework.
