Conformance Testing Method
A standardized test structure located on the border of a manufacturing panel replicates the trace geometry of the functional board for quality control. This structure undergoes impedance coupon verification to ensure that the trace widths and dielectric thicknesses produced by the factory match the design specifications. The testing provides a non-destructive method to assess the high-frequency performance of the entire panel without damaging active components.
Each panel must pass this check before it can proceed to final routing and singulation.
Measurement Extraction Procedure
Probing the test points on the board edge allows a time domain reflectometer to measure signal reflections. During impedance coupon verification, a fast rise time pulse is injected into the coupon traces to record the reflection coefficient. The reflectometer converts this reflection signature into an impedance plot versus distance.
Substrate Deviation Analysis
Discrepancies between the design targets and the coupon measurements usually point to lamination pressure issues or excessive copper etching. A successful impedance coupon verification confirms that the dielectric constant of the prepreg and the laminate thickness are within tolerance. If the coupon fails the test, the entire board panel is typically rejected because the high-speed traces on the functional boards will exhibit similar impedance mismatches.
This process protects the assembly facility from mounting expensive components onto defective bare substrates.
