Layer Registration
Multilayer manufacturing requires precise alignment of individual prepreg and copper foils before the hot press cycle begins. Fabricators use lamination tooling pins to lock these loose sheets into a single, cohesive stack on the layup plates. This physical constraint prevents the internal circuit layers from drifting during handling.
Thermal Expansion
High temperature and extreme pressure in the press cycle cause both the composite materials and the metal fixtures to expand. Because the copper sheet expands differently than the steel plates, lamination tooling pins must allow some controlled slippage. Elongated slots in the margins of the inner layers accommodate this dynamic movement while maintaining the central axis of the board.
This calculated tolerance prevents the internal pads from shearing off the trace connections.
Assembly Integrity
Post-press inspection relies on the accuracy of this layer stack to ensure that subsequent drilling hits the buried pads. If the lamination tooling pins wear down, the resulting layer-to-layer misalignment ruins the electrical continuity of the board. Inspectors measure this internal skew using x-ray machines that calculate the offset of fiducial markers on each layer.
Rejecting panels with excessive registration drift before expensive drilling begins protects the manufacturing yield of the factory. Keeping these metal pins in tight tolerance ensures high repeatability in the production of complex multilayer circuit boards.
