Inspection Method
Board fabrication relies on non destructive evaluation to locate internal voids and delamination within multi layer printed circuit board structures without cutting the laminate apart. Ultrasonic scanning and high resolution X ray imaging penetrate the copper planes and dielectric layers to expose hidden defects that visual examination cannot reach. Subsurface micro voids inside plated through holes weaken the thermal fatigue resistance of the finished assembly during subsequent wave soldering operations.
Commercial acceptance standards require these volumetric anomalies to remain below specific dimensional thresholds to prevent catastrophic opens during thermal cycling.
Acoustic Coupling
High frequency sound waves travel through a liquid couplant into the solid composite to map density variations across the internal laminate structure. Reflected echo signals return to the transducer with varying amplitudes that correspond directly to acoustic impedance mismatches caused by internal delamination or moisture entrapment. Water immersion tanks provide the uniform acoustic medium necessary for high precision scanning without damaging sensitive surface finishes or copper traces.
Signal attenuation peaks whenever the beam encounters a microscopic crack because air pockets reflect almost all acoustic energy away from the receiving crystal.
Radiographic Imaging
Short wavelength electromagnetic radiation passes through the entire thickness of the circuit board to project an internal density shadow onto a digital detector panel. Gray scale variations across the resulting radiogram reveal structural discrepancies such as internal layer misalignment or incomplete resin fill in heavy copper planes. Geometric magnification allows operators to isolate microscopic defects by adjusting the focal spot distance relative to the sample position.
Voltage adjustments on the radiation source optimize contrast sensitivity for specific copper weights without exposing surrounding assembly stations to hazardous scatter radiation.
