Thermal Audit
Surface-mount assembly lines must verify that reflow ovens maintain the correct thermal zones for soldering. The reflow profile validation process measures the actual temperatures experienced by a board as it travels through the oven heating chambers. This step ensures that the solder paste reaches its liquid temperature without damaging the components or substrate.
Thermocouple Run
Technicians attach thermocouple sensors to critical points on a sample board and connect them to a data logger. The logger records the temperature throughout the oven, measuring parameters like ramp rate, soak time, and time above liquidus. This data is compared against the solder paste manufacturer’s specifications to confirm that the profile is correct for the specific board design being assembled.
If the thermal mass of the board is high, as with thick, multi-layer boards, the validation run is indispensable for ensuring the center of the board reaches the required solder flow temperature.
Joint Reliability
Regular validation prevents solder defects like cold joints, tombstoning, and pad damage from overheating. If the temperature rises too quickly or remains high for too long, the board laminate can delaminate or the components can suffer internal damage. Consequently, assemblies that are validated using this routine exhibit better mechanical and electrical reliability over their lifetime.
