Dielectric Material
Microwave and millimeter wave circuits require substrates with exceptionally low loss and a very low dielectric constant. Using rt duroid 5880 provides a stable platform for high frequency applications because of its glass microfiber reinforced ptfe composition. This material maintains a consistent permitivity across a wide range of frequencies, making it a standard choice for radar and satellite systems.
Microwave Performance
Signal attenuation is minimized by the low dissipation factor of the teflon based resin system. Because rt duroid 5880 has a dielectric constant of approximately two point two, it allows for wider traces and lower parasitic capacitance. The moisture absorption of the material is extremely low, which prevents the electrical properties from shifting in humid environments.
This stability is required for phase sensitive applications where even a minor change in the dielectric constant would desynchronize the signal.
Handling Constraint
Softness of the ptfe resin makes the material difficult to drill and plate compared to standard epoxy boards. Specialized chemical treatments are needed to make the surface of rt duroid 5880 accept the copper plating in the holes. Fabricators must use backing boards and specific drill speeds to prevent the soft material from smearing or tearing during the hole creation process.
