Calibration Reference
A physical block with high precision micro steps of known heights calibrate the vertical axis of three dimensional inspection systems. Solder paste inspection systems utilize a step height standard to verify that the laser or structured light sensors measure heights accurately. This hardware artifact has steps measured in micrometers and is certified by national standards bodies.
It ensures that the digital height measurements on production boards are traceably accurate.
Measurement Verification
Testing the vertical accuracy of the inspection head requires running regular measurements against this calibrated artifact to detect sensor drift. The step height standard has metal or glass surfaces with flat, stepped regions of specific thicknesses like fifty and one hundred microns. During calibration, the sensor scans these steps, and the software compares the measured height to the certified value.
If the difference is outside the tolerated limit, the system adjusts the scaling factors of the optical sensor. This calibration is necessary because changes in ambient temperature can cause slight expansion in the sensor mounts. It prevents measurement errors that would result in incorrect solder volume calculations.
System Traceability
Calibration records for the standard are maintained to comply with factory quality management systems and customer audits. These records prove that the inspection systems are aligned with international measurement references. Using a certified standard ensures that inspection data can be compared across different production sites.
This verification is essential for high reliability contracts where measurement integrity must be documented.
