Magnetic Mapping
Non-destructive test maps the magnetic flux density across the exterior of a powered circuit to identify current distribution patterns. Surface magnetic field profiling detects hidden defects by measuring the magnetic signature of the traces and comparing it to a known good reference. It is particularly effective for locating internal shorts in multi-layer boards where optical methods cannot reach.
The technique relies on the principle that any current flow produces a corresponding magnetic field that extends beyond the dielectric boundary.
Diagnostic Capability
High sensitivity sensors move over the assembly to capture the magnetic field lines generated by active components and traces. Through surface magnetic field profiling, engineers can visualize the actual path of the current and identify deviations caused by copper slivers or manufacturing errors. This process is often automated to provide a fast and repeatable diagnostic for complex power distribution networks.
Analysis Result
Data analysis converts these magnetic readings into a visual map of current density. Because surface magnetic field profiling does not require physical contact with the conductors, it can be performed on populated boards without risking damage to sensitive components. The resulting profile provides a clear indication of whether the internal power planes are performing according to the design specifications.
