Internal Positioning
Non-destructive imaging of internal copper targets using high-energy radiation allows fabricators to align processing tools with hidden features. In multi-layer circuit board manufacturing, X-ray alignment optimizes the drill coordinates based on the actual locations of internal pads after lamination. This real-time positioning compensates for any shift or shrinkage that occurred during the pressing cycle.
Drill Setting
Tooling machines with integrated imaging sensors capture the position of buried registration targets on each panel prior to drilling. The system calculates the centroid of these targets across all inner layers to determine the best-fit drilling pattern that maximizes annular ring sizes. This calculation adjusts the drill program dynamically, compensating for both scaling and rotation of the panel.
If the alignment is not performed, drill offsets can cut through internal pads, causing breakout defects that sever the connection and ruin the entire panel.
Inspection Efficiency
Automated x-ray inspection systems can process dozens of panels per hour, providing a fast and reliable method for high-volume fabrication lines. These machines store the measured offsets for each panel, creating a digital trace of registration quality across each production batch. This data is fed back into the lamination and artwork processes to continuously improve the precision of subsequent lamination runs.
