Acceptable Deviation
Permissible limits of variation in the characteristic impedance of printed circuit board transmission lines define the boundaries of signal integrity during high-speed digital operation. These boundary ranges, widely known as controlled impedance tolerances, restrict deviation to plus or minus ten percent of the nominal target value. High-speed systems depend on these tight ranges.
Fabrication Variable
Dielectric thickness and trace geometry constitute the primary physical drivers that alter the electrical profile during manufacture. Wet etching processes during board fabrication frequently alter trace width, which changes the capacitive coupling to reference planes. Variations in the prepreg resin content and the subsequent pressed height of laminated layers alter the spacing between conductor and ground.
Fabricators must dynamically adjust the photolithographic artwork based on incoming dielectric measurements to maintain conformity. This balance ensures that the physical dimensions remain aligned with the target impedance requirements.
Verification Metric
Time-domain reflectometry provides the standard testing methodology to verify the electrical properties on a dedicated test coupon. Test systems send a fast electrical pulse along the signal track and measure the amplitude of reflected waves to calculate the impedance along the trace length. This non-destructive test operates as a pass-fail gate prior to final board release.
Panels exceeding the specified limits fail the electrical test and require rejection.
