Waveform Presentation
A graphical plot of reflected signal amplitude versus time or frequency represents the primary diagnostic tool for characterizing signal integrity in high-speed transmission lines. These dynamic reflection curves reveal the location and magnitude of impedance discontinuities along a circuit board trace.
Impedance Characterization
Time-domain reflectometry instruments generate these curves by launching a fast electrical pulse into the trace and measuring the returned energy. Any mismatch in impedance, such as a change in trace width, an internal via, or a connector transition, sends a portion of the signal back to the receiver. The resulting plot shows positive reflections for inductive mismatches and negative reflections for capacitive transitions.
Designers use the gathered data to pinpoint the exact location of defects without damaging the assembled board.
Signal Quality
Analyzing the shape and rise time of the returned pulses allows engineers to optimize the layout of high-speed digital buses. When traces run close to other routing layers, the proximity can cause impedance dips that degrade signal transition edges. Resolving these anomalies is necessary to prevent data errors in circuits operating above several gigahertz.
Modern simulation software compares the measured curves with theoretical designs to verify that the manufactured board meets its electrical specifications.
