Specification Standard
Procurement documents for high-frequency circuit boards rely on structured sheets that define the exact material properties required for low-loss substrates. This document, known as an IPC-4103 slash sheet, contains the thermal and electrical limits for a specific laminate sub-family. It allows designers to call out high-frequency material properties on fabrication drawings without naming a proprietary manufacturer brand.
Fabricators use these criteria to select compliant substrates that meet the design electrical requirements. Each sheet governs a unique combination of resin system, reinforcement material, and flame retardant rating to ensure trace predictability across different suppliers.
Material Class
Hydrocarbon and PTFE resin systems are categorized into distinct sheets based on their performance at microwave frequencies. The slash sheet dictates the allowable tolerances for both the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor across a range of test frequencies. It also specifies thermal metrics like the glass transition temperature and coefficient of thermal expansion.
These values ensure the laminate survives lead-free reflow assembly without delamination.
Quality Compliance
Inspection labs use the slash sheet values to verify the incoming material during quality audits. If a substrate fails the peel strength or thermal stress requirements stated on the sheet, it is rejected. Suppliers must provide certificates of conformance that reference the specific sheet number to guarantee traceability.
This process simplifies international material sourcing.
